We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Philanthropy New Zealand’s new Chief Executive Tony Paine, who will be joining our Wellington-based team from 16 January 2017.
Tony, currently the Secretary General (CEO) at New Zealand Red Cross, has extensive experience in not-for-profit leadership and management as well as experience in grant-making, governance and government relations.
Philanthropy NZ Chair Kate Frykberg says, “We are delighted to be appointing a new CE of Tony’s calibre and I know that Philanthropy NZ will go from strength to strength under his leadership in pursuit of our vision of a ‘thoughtfully generous Aotearoa New Zealand’.”
Working in the health, social service and cultural sectors in New Zealand for over 30 years, Tony’s career began as a psychiatric social worker and includes work with the NZ AIDS Foundation, the Christchurch Methodist Mission, CEO of the Comcare Trust, the Christchurch Arts Centre and Victim Support NZ. He has also served on the Board of Housing New Zealand Corporation for five years.
“With many years’ experience in the community sector, I know first hand what a powerful force good philanthropy is. I’m really looking forward to joining the great team at Philanthropy NZ and continuing our support of the sector. Effective, generous philanthropy is essential as we all work to meet the challenges of building strong and connected communities across Aotearoa New Zealand,” says Tony.
Tony will be taking over from CE Liz Gibbs who is leaving to head up the Te Papa Foundation.
“Liz has done an excellent job as CE of PNZ and has built the organisation considerably over the last four years. We wish her well in her new role,” says Kate.
