A stocktake of funding has identified that $35m in philanthropic funds went to environmental causes in the 2017-2018 year.
Philanthropy New Zealand’s Stocktake of Environmental Funding identified 102 philanthropic and grant making organisations that funded the environment in this time period. The $35m made up four percent of the total funds these organisations distributed.
Philanthropy New Zealand’s Environmental Funders’ Network had called for this research, given the lack of data on activity in this area. Foundation North, Rātā Foundation, The Tindall Foundation and Wellington Community Trust funded the research.
Given the variability in how the wide range of funders report on their philanthropic spend, there are a number of limitations to this research, and it’s likely total environmental funding is greater than what this stocktake identified from publicly available information. The research looked at organisational funders, not individuals who donate.
