Wellington Community Trust commits 2.1 million to climate change

November 8, 2019

Wellington Community Trust has committed $2.1 million to their recently created regional Climate Fund. While no firm decisions have been made yet on how the fund will be distributed, the key focus areas for the fund are likely to be around climate change adaptation and mitigation in the Wellington region.

The decision to dedicate funds to climate change came after many WCT Board members and staff attended the PNZ Summit in May 2019, and heard Rod Oram speak about the challenges climate change presented to Aotearoa New Zealand, and the world.

An advisory group of environmental experts with a range of interests and backgrounds will be convened to advise the Trust on how to fund wisely and with impact in this space.

Wellington Community Trust want to collaborate with other regional funders to increase and amplify their funding. They hope to inspire other Trusts and Foundations around Aotearoa New Zealand to join them in taking action.
