Update to our strategic framework and 2023-2024 plan

By Sue McCabe, Chief Executive

Enabling positive change; inspiring generosity and strengthening the funding system continue to be the three ways that Philanthropy New Zealand | Tōpūtanga Tuku Aroha o Aotearoa (PNZ) implements its purpose to celebrate and grow effective giving.

PNZ has just reviewed and updated its strategic framework, following input from members via a survey late last year, and Board decision making. The framework is consistent with previous iterations, reflecting the stability in the work of PNZ, while still enabling iteration to respond to the changing external environment and membership needs.

At the June Board meeting, the 2023-2024 workplan was also finalised. You can read a summary of key activity over the next 12 months to progress organisational strategy here.

The most visible change in the strategic framework is moving from the aim to ‘support better giving’ to ‘enables positive change’. The changed wording better reflects that PNZ provides support for philanthropists and grantmakers beyond their giving.

For example, its collaborative work with other agencies and its own initiatives to support funders looking at their own carbon footprint; and move into more impact investing. We will be measuring our success in this area and in others by asking funder members via survey in December whether our work was enabling for their efforts to create positive change.

Enabling positive change still incorporates the professional development, grantmaking training, sharing best practice, and the convening and connecting of funders in various ways that’s always been the backbone of PNZ’s offerings.

The framework remains aspirational in parts, and the inclusion of PNZ leading at the system level is an appropriate ongoing challenge on top of its work to service members and support their different objectives.

Thank you to our members, sponsors, stakeholders and others that support our work. PNZ is looking forward to working with others to celebrate and grow effective giving in Aotearoa New Zealand.
