A campaign to inspire philanthropy across Aotearoa
Day twelve
And that’s a wrap! Helping others, volunteering our time and energy and donating money to causes we care deeply about is intrinsic to so many kiwis. The 12 Days of Giving Campaign has shined a light on many amazing ways we are already giving to each other, and we are so proud to have been able to do so
We want to thank all of the fantastic people and organisations that gave of their time and aroha to make this campaign a success. We also want to acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of people who give back every week, just because they know it’s the right thing to do. You make our country such a wonderful place to be.
So, stay safe these holidays, enjoy your time with loved ones and watch this space in 2025 as we continue to showcase how giving is at the very core of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Day Eleven
“You hear about philanthropy always the being the big dollar, but that isn’t really the case, philanthropy is for the love of humanity.”
We’re excited to present a special double-header conversation with Lynne Umbers of The Christchurch Foundation and Arron Perriam of Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand. Community Foundations are one of the fastest-growing avenues for philanthropy, offering individuals a meaningful way to support local causes that are close to their hearts.
Day ten
"Philanthropy, in New Zealand, is more than just about the sector; it's actually about everyday generosity making a big difference to our community's sense of self-worth, agency, positivity, and hopefulness for the future."
Today we hear from our very own Rahul Watson Govindan, Philanthropy New Zealand’s CE, about his vision for the future of philanthropy.
Tune in to learn more!
Day nine
Today, we’re talking to Kiri Te Wano from Project Tongariro about how communities are driving real change through funding and volunteering.
Tune in to learn about the initiatives restoring the mauri of Tongariro National Park and its surrounds. 💚
Day eight
“The more people that participate in philanthropy, the greater impact we can have together.”
We recently sat down with Jacinda Page from Southern Cross Healthcare to learn about the incredible mahi their charitable arm is doing to grow healthcare opportunities for those in need across Aotearoa.
Day seven
The Simplicity Foundation is at the intersection between business and philanthropy, showing how organisations can leverage their resources to make a meaningful impact in communities.
Simplicity KiwiSaver and Investment Fund members pay low fees which helps them save for their future, and they can also feel-good knowing that Simplicity passes 15% of its management fees to the Foundation which supports some great Kiwi charities.
We had the privilege of speaking with Marisa Fong and Rebecca Roberts, who are at the heart of this incredible mahi. Have a listen!
Day six
Family foundations, like the Michael and Suzanne Borrin Foundation, have been pillars of support for New Zealand communities for decades. Together, they contribute nearly 10% of the $4 billion in annual philanthropic and grant funding to the community sector. 🌟
Hear from Pulotu Tupe Solomon-Tanoa'i-Tanoa'i as she shares the inspiring story of her foundation's mahi and the impact their founder's vision has had on shaping their mission.
Day five
Since 2002, Te Rourou, One New Zealand’s charitable arm, has invested over $50 million to support more than 1,000 community organisations across Aotearoa, making it one of the largest corporate philanthropic contributors in the country.
Check out Ezekial Raui’s kōrero on Te Rourou and their mission to create a more equitable Aotearoa for all rangatahi.
Day four
Today is International Volunteer Day, and we’re are delighted to showcase the great work Fair Food does in West Auckland, and give a shout out to all of the 1000’s of people who volunteer their time to support Fair Food’s mahi. Every month, between 300-400 volunteers give their time and aroha at their kai tables and Conscious Kitchen to ensure rescued kai can become shared meals for those who need it most.
Thanks so much to Michelle Blau and her tīma for sharing their story of giving, and for being such inspirational and hard-working humans 💛
Day three
We spoke with Scott Gilmour of I Have a Dream Charitable Trust. His charity focuses on inspiring dreams and enabling futures for tamariki and rangatahi across Aotearoa.
Through their programme, participants (known as Dreamers) are supported and mentored by Navigators throughout their school years and beyond. This ongoing support connects them to valuable education and employment opportunities.
Day two
"𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬."
We had the opportunity to speak with Angela Gattung, Executive Director of the Gattung Foundation, about her commitment to giving.
Angela shares insights on the "heart effect," emphasising her mission to address inequalities against women in Aotearoa. In this kōrero, she explores how we can create meaningful change by contributing our time, resources, or financial support to causes close to our hearts.
Day one
Giving is contagious!
Starting today, we’ll be sharing stories that highlight the power of giving in Aotearoa.
We know that philanthropy is at the heart of our country and that Kiwis have always been known for their kindness and giving spirit. Now, we want to inspire YOU to think about how you can get involved too. Whether big or small, every act of giving counts! 🌱
Stay tuned over the next few weeks for the 12 Days of Giving.
Philanthropy New Zealand has teamed up with the New Zealand government plus businesses and philanthropists from around the moto to showcase inspiring stories of philanthropy and share tools that can help to grow effective giving. A new video, with participants from across our sector, will be published every weekday until Tuesday 17 December.
