Philanthropy and grantmakers play a critical role in supporting communities to prepare for, respond to and help communities recover from disasters and major events, alongside other partners and collaborators.  Here we highlight the learning and experience of philanthropic funders in Aotearoa to support efficient and effective giving in this area.

Updated Disaster Guide

This updated disaster guide from Philanthropy New Zealand | Tōpūtanga Tuku Aroha o Aotearoa developed on the back of the research , recognises the critical role that philanthropic funders and community grant-makers can play in supporting communities to prevent future disasters and reduce vulnerability, but also as well as offers ways to respond more effectively and rapidly when they do occur. It draws on the learning of funders who have already experienced such events first hand, and also weaves in a number of community perspectives. from leaders working closely with impacted communities.

The guide acknowledges also reflects on the enduring impact of disasters, extending far beyond the immediate aftermath, with effects felt for months to years following an event. It provides insight into various avenues through which funders can address the evolving needs of communities during this prolonged period. With environmental hazard events becoming more frequent, there's an urgent call for funders to take proactive steps in preparing their plans, policies, and personnel for effective disaster response.

Additionally, aA concise two-page summary also outlines key actions to consider during the response phase of a disaster and is . This resource serves as a valuable tool for decision-making under pressure., offering guidance to those facing the challenges of a major event in real-time.

We are very pleased to have collaborated with researchers from the Joint Centre for Disaster Research (JCDR) at Massey University who are undertaking this studyundertook research and provided updated material for this guide.
